Finally, a calendar as unique as you

You're receiving this email because you subscribed to a calendar on Stanza, where anyone can add the schedules they care about straight into their calendar app. Now and then we write about what we're building. This is one of those notes.

A reader told us their calendar was a mess - six different apps, half the games missing, none of it in one place. So we built personalization into Stanza: add the teams and leagues you actually follow, and your calendar builds itself around you in one tap.

Our whole job was accuracy: right games, right times, always up to date.

You read those events at a glance and make small decisions all week. Home game or away? Leave now or later? Set the recording or risk the score?

Then a reader left this comment

"Would it be possible to always display the home team first in fixture names? On the 9th of August, Sparta - Feyenoord is listed as 'Feyenoord vs. Sparta Rotterdam', location Het Kasteel. The location implies Sparta is the home team, but the title suggests it's a home game for Feyenoord. I use the first team listed to immediately see whether it's a home or away match. Displaying the home team first would make the calendar much clearer."

That comment showed us what one-feed-for-everyone actually costs. In American convention, "Feyenoord vs. Sparta" reads fine. In European football, the home team comes first. Neither is wrong, but a single format has to pick a side, and everyone on the other side has to stop and decode.

Title order was never a style choice. It is the speed at which you can read your own week.

So we built personalization.

Every event from a subscription, rendered your way:

• Titles: full names, short names, or "LAL @ GSW"
• Order: your team first, or home team first
• Your marker: an emoji that makes your games jump out
• Home and away: flagged, no decoding
• Venue line: swap the arena for where you are watching
• Alerts: right before tip-off, not mid-meeting
• Scores: hidden, so nothing spoils the recording

The practical win is speed: the more your events match the way you already think, the faster you can glance and go. Home or away, leave or wait, record or watch, answered in the half-second you gave it.
